Village U Fall Registration Open Now

Registration for Village U, the VLP’s adult enrichment program, is now open. Courses run between September 21 and December 14, and range from free to $10. Register in person at the VLP. For more information, contact Emily Gould at 410-235-2210, ext. 208 or at emily.gould@villagelearningplace.org.

Creative Writing Workshop

Mondays, September 28-October 26, 6:15-7:15 pm

A workshop style course in creative writing where students will both produce their own work and read and discuss other’s work. As a class we will also read, discuss what good writing is and getting published. (Fiction & Non-Fiction both accepted)

$10 registration fee.

This course, a continuation of the 2008-2009 beginner course, is always open to new students. This fall, students will improve their vocabulary, conversation, and writing skills. Most importantly, students will learn together in a friendly environment.

Meditation

This is an interactive, participatory class, which will teach meditation as a science that can be incorporated into the lives of people of all faiths and belief systems. We will explore the reasons for and benefits of meditation: physical health, intellectual, mental, emotional and spiritual benefits, and the benefits for the world around us.

$10 registration fee.

Writing the Memoir

Short lectures on the memoir as a literary genre. Students will read and discuss excerpts from published memoirs and respond to writing prompts that will help them to focus and develop their own stories.

Learn about the “nectar of the gods” while quaffing ales and lagers. This workshop covers the history of brewing and drinking, the geography of ale, beer marketing, politics, legends and lore, and proper tasting. Students are asked to bring a 6-pack to share. 21 and over, please!

Behind the Smoke and Mirrors: the Tobacco Industry Unfiltered

The topics of smoke-free indoor air laws, government regulation, and tobacco taxes can all be big topics of discussion.  Where does the Tobacco Industry fit into all this? Are they just another business? Ryan Coffman, a Tobacco Treatment Specialist from a DC metro area hospital will expose the past, present, and future of one of the world’s most controversial and influential companies.

Beginning Chinese Language

Study spoken Mandarin Chinese Language. Learn Chinese phonetics (pinyin). Learn simple conversation skills and Chinese culture. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to engage in simple conversation in Chinese. Prerequisite: None. Text: Integrated Chinese.

Continuation of Beginning Chinese Language. Study spoken Mandarin Chinese and written Chinese characters. Learn to read and write sentences using Chinese characters. Part of the course covers classical Chinese poetry. Students study selected poems of the Tang dynasty Chinese poets, including Du Fu, Li Bai, Li shang-yin, Du Mu. Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to write simple classical Chinese poems publishable in Chinese literary journals and Chinese language newspapers. Texts: Integrated Chinese; poetry studying materials will be provided by the instructor.
