Position:  LINK Lead Teacher – Primary Grades

Hours:  Year-round position is for full-time, exempt employment that requires 35 hours a week minimum.  This position involves working some evenings and occasional weekend hours.

Description: The VLP is looking for a committed individual who wants to increase their experience working with urban youth. Because the VLP values and recognizes the importance of relationship-building to support the improvement of student academic and social success, we are seeking an individual who will make a 2-3 year commitment to this position and the organization.

The LINK Lead Teacher is responsible for managing all classroom activities in the VLP’s after-school & summer programs including:  program delivery, recruitment and enrollment of program participants, management of volunteers and classroom assistants, and oversight of program events.

Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Youth Programs Coordinators, performs the following functions:

Programming:

  • Use of innovation and creativity in the classroom to result in academic progress
  • Weekly submission of lesson plans that are aligned to Baltimore City Schools’ guidelines and MBE/MS programming (as appropriate)
  • A case management approach in recruiting and retaining of enrolled students and engaging families
  • Involvement with the MBE/MS teaching community and students’ school day activities
  • Planning and coordination of Family Fun Night activities and field trips
  • Interviews potential work study students and volunteers (as needed)
  • Participates in the supervision and evaluation of all classroom assistants
  • Participates in LINK Summer activities equaling no less than one academic component and two separate enrichment components
  • Actively utilizes the VLP library, its staff, and its services
  • Models positive relationships between youth and co-workers
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Reporting:

  • Keeps accurate student classroom files including, but not limited to:
    • A updated daily roster/sign-in sheet complete with parent’s and/or guardian’s signature
    • Weekly entry of daily attendance and enrollment and dismissal of students into ETO to capture classroom activities and outcomes
    • Periodic progress reports for each student
    • Updated household information for each student, especially phone numbers
    • Active participation in student and family surveys and assessments, including STAR Reading and STAR Math
    • Assists in evaluating program for its effectiveness by providing regular input to aid in its success

Community Outreach:

  • Assists in promotion of VLP programs and in student recruitment
  • Acts as a liaison between VLP, local schools, parents, and young patrons to support youths’ academic achievements
  • Provides a high level of customer service to parents, partners, library patrons, and the general public

Staff Collaboration:

  • Works as part of a team to achieve the VLP’s Mission and to integrate the VLP’s Core Principles in all efforts
  • Required attendance and staffing of major VLP “all staff” events and “LINK Program Staff” events
  • Attends VLP staff meetings and meets with supervisor regularly
  • Regularly updates Position Duplication Plan, and communicates/delegates relevant responsibilities while away from the VLP
  • Provides written reports on program activities to all staff via email regularly
  • Addresses email requests and phone messages in a timely manner
  • Works with VLP team to plan and implement outreach services and special events as needed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years teaching experience in an urban setting
  • B.A. in Education or related field
  • Flexibility, initiative, creativity, and excellent organizational and planning skills
  • Commitment to providing service to a diverse, urban population
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills for working with both children and adults

Starting Compensation:  $29,000-$31,000

Start Date: June 11 (posting open until filled)
