Position: Engagement and Intervention Specialist

Start Date: January 13, 2020

Hours: Year-round position is for full-time, hourly employment (average 32–35 hours/week). This position involves working some evenings and occassional weekend hours.

Description: The VLP is looking for a committed individual who wants to increase their experience in building relationships with urban youth and their families in afterschool and summer programming. LINK (Let’s Invest in Neighborhood Kids) is an out-of-school program that seeks to provide academic support and character education in a fun and safe environment. Because the VLP values and recognizes the importance of relationship-building to support the improvement of students’ academic and social success, we are seeking an individual who will make a 2–3 year commitment to this position and the organization.

The Engagement & Intervention Specialist is responsible for boosting student, family, and community engagement in our LINK After School and Summer programs through curriculum planning, small-group instruction, management of volunteers and classroom assistants, parent engagament, and oversight of program events. The Engagament & Intervention Specialist also oversees family storytimes, aftercare, outreach, and other literacy activities and events, and serves as a substitute teacher as needed in After School and Summer programs.

Responsibilities:  Under the direction of the Academics & Evaluation Coordinator, performs the following functions:

Programming

  • Uses restorative practices to build strong relationships to and between students and community members
  • Uses innovation and creativity in the classroom to result in academic progress
  • Provides academic intervention in small groups for students who are struggling in school
  • Acts as a substitute teacher in PreK–10th grade classes in the event of teacher absence
  • Takes a case management approach in assessing and meeting students’ academic and social needs
  • Involvement with partner school teaching community and students’ school day activities
  • Planning and coordination of Family Fun Night activities, End of Year/Summer celebrations, and field trips
  • Manages staff recruitment; participate in the supervision, scheduling, and evaluation of all classroom assistants
  • Actively utilizes the VLP library, its staff, and its services
  • Models positive relationships between youth and co-workers

Reporting

  • Maintains and reports accurate student data as required by the program
  • Participate actively in student and family surveys and assessments
  • Assists in evaluating program for its effectiveness by providing regular input to aid in its success

Community Outreach

  • Coordinates with community partners to provide enrichment for LINK participants
  • Coordinates with partner schools for Books2Go and Schools Out Camps
  • Assists in promotion of VLP programs and in student recruitment
  • Acts as a liaison between the VLP, local schools, parents, library patrons, and the general public

Staff Collaboration

  • Works as part of a team to achieve the VLP’s Mission and to integrate the VLP’s Core Principles in all efforts
  • Required attendance and staffing of major VLP “All Staff” events and “LINK Program Staff” events
  • Attends VLP staff meetings and meets with supervisor regularly
  • Regularly updates Position Duplication Plan, and communicates/delegates relevant responsibilities while away from the VLP
  • Provides written reports on program activities to all staff via email regularly
  • Addresses email requests and phone messages in a timely manner
  • Works with VLP team to plan and implement outreach services and special events as needed
  • Opens and closes library and 2510 building using proper security procedures

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  • 3+ years of teaching experience in an urban setting
  • B.A. in Education or related field
  • Flexibility, initiative, creativity, and excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Commitment to providing service to a diverse, urban population
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills for working with both children and adults
